Exploring Wisconsin Dells: A Midwestern Gem for Families, Foodies, and Waterpark Lovers
Looking for a family getaway that blends splash-worthy fun, natural beauty, nostalgic dining, and quirky charm? Welcome to the Wisconsin Dells — affectionately known as the “Waterpark Capital of the World.” This scenic destination in central Wisconsin is a summertime rite of passage for many Midwestern families, and with good reason. From legendary waterparks to scenic river cruises and vintage supper clubs, the Dells offers the perfect mix of fun and flavor for travelers of all ages.
Here’s how to make the most of your visit — and where to eat, stay, and splash!
Make a Splash at the Best Waterparks
The Wisconsin Dells is home to Noah’s Ark, America’s largest outdoor waterpark, and Wilderness Resort, one of the largest indoor/outdoor waterpark complexes in the country. We visited both — and our kids (ages 4 and 1) had the time of their lives!
Noah’s Ark
With over 70 acres of slides, pools, and attractions, Noah’s Ark is a must. Our 4-year-old was able to enjoy many of the mid-size slides, while our 1-year-old loved the toddler splash pads and wading pools.
Tip: Rent a cabana! It gave us a shaded home base with a cooler, food and drink service, and a place to regroup — especially helpful with a baby in tow.
Wilderness Resort
The Wilderness is a sprawling complex of indoor and outdoor waterparks. It’s ideal for families who want a mix of weather-proof and outdoor fun. We also rented a cabana here, though with so many indoor spaces and activities spread out across the property, we didn’t use it as much.
Parent Pro Tip: While outside food and drink aren’t allowed, both waterparks made exceptions for baby formula and baby food. Just check with guest services at the entrance.
Dine Like a Wisconsinite: Supper Clubs & Local Favorites
One of the most unique — and delicious — experiences in the Dells is visiting a Wisconsin supper club. These throwback dining establishments combine classic steakhouse vibes with family-owned hospitality, hearty meals, and (of course) Old Fashioneds.
What is a Supper Club?
Supper clubs are a cherished part of Wisconsin culture, dating back to the Prohibition era. They’re typically open only for dinner and known for cozy wood-paneled interiors, relish trays, prime rib, fish fry Fridays, and classic cocktails.
Here are some must-visit Dells supper clubs:
- Ishnala Supper Club: Perched on Mirror Lake, this iconic spot is as much about the views as the food. Arrive early — they don’t take reservations!
- Del-Bar: An elegant, upscale experience with expertly prepared steaks and seafood.
- House of Embers: Family-owned since 1959, this cozy supper club is famous for its ribs and classic ambiance.
There are many more local gems just outside town — ask a local or wander a bit, and you’ll stumble upon supper club magic.
Breakfast & Brunch Worth Waking Up For
For a casual, welcoming spot with excellent coffee and fresh-baked treats, Bella Goose Coffee is a must. We loved the relaxed vibe, gluten-free scones, and kid-friendly brunch menu. Whether you’re grabbing an oat milk latte or settling in for waffles and eggs, Bella Goose delivers on flavor and feel-good community vibes.
Casual Bites: The Grateful Shed
For something totally different, check out the Grateful Shed, a funky indoor food hall housed in a repurposed building with vintage buses and communal seating. It’s fun, loud, and laid-back — with options for tacos, burgers, craft beer, and more. A perfect place for lunch or a casual dinner with kids.
Explore the Natural Beauty of the Dells
While the waterparks may grab the headlines, don’t miss the Wisconsin River and the unique sandstone formations that give the Dells its name.
Take a Dells Boat Tour or a Duck Boat ride (yes, the WWII-style amphibious vehicles!) to cruise past iconic rock formations like Witches Gulch and Stand Rock — the latter made famous by 1800s photographer H.H. Bennett. These scenic outings are equal parts fun and history lesson, and a great way to appreciate the area’s natural beauty.
More Family Fun Beyond the Water
If you need a break from water slides, the Dells still delivers:
- Go Kart Tracks – Multiple options for little racers and grown-up speed demons alike.
- Mini Golf – Putt your way through pirate ships, castles, and more.
- Ripley’s Believe It or Not! – A fun and quirky stop right downtown.
- Ghost and Haunted Houses – Perfect for brave kids and grownups.
Final Thoughts
Wisconsin Dells is a Midwest classic — equal parts adventure and nostalgia. With enough variety to satisfy toddlers, teens, and parents alike, it’s a fantastic long weekend getaway or summer road trip destination.
