The Comedy of Convenience: Why Theme Cruises Are the Future of Focused Travel (A Nateland at Sea Review)

They say laughter is the best medicine, but after my recent trip, I’d argue it’s laughter plus a taco on a beach in Mexico.

I recently returned from Nateland at Sea, a theme cruise organized by Sixthman featuring Nate Bargatze and a lineup of incredible comedians. While the jokes were the main attraction, the experience taught me something vital about the travel industry: Theme cruising is changing the game.

Whether you are a traveler looking for a vacation that matches your specific passion, or a potential travel agent looking for a lucrative niche to specialize in, here is my insider’s look at why this “Comedy Festival at Sea” was the ultimate vacation.

The “Nateland” Vibe: More Than Just a Show

If you’ve ever been to a comedy club, you know the drill: wait in line, buy two drinks, watch the show, leave. A theme cruise completely flips that script.

Sailing on the Norwegian Jewel, the entire ship was transformed into “Nateland.” It felt less like a cruise and more like an intimate community. We saw the talent—comedians like Aaron Weber, Dusty Slay, John Crist, and Brian Bates—grabbing ice cream at the buffet or smoking cigars on the deck. They were incredibly down-to-earth, often pausing for photos and chats with fans.

The schedule was packed with unique events you can’t see anywhere else:

  • Exclusive Access: Because we were among the first 500 staterooms booked (a perk of booking early with an agent!), we got a professional photo with Nate Bargatze.
  • Unique Performances: We got to be in the audience for a live recording of the reunion episode of the Nateland Podcast. We were also treated to an exclusive live sneak peek of Nate’s upcoming game show, The Greatest Average American.
  • Interactive Fun: From a Q&A session where Nate discussed plans for a future “Nateland Theme Park” to his dad, Steve Bargatze, performing a hilarious “comedy magic” show, the entertainment never stopped.
  • Managing the Crowds: Sixthman nailed the logistics for the main event. Every passenger was assigned a specific night and seat for Nate’s headline show, meaning zero waiting in line for the big performance. However, be prepared for the rest of the schedule—since the other comedy shows were first-come, first-served, there were definitely lines to get into those!

The Ship: The Norwegian Jewel & The Suite Life

The Jewel is a bit older and smaller than the mega-ships we often book, but for a theme cruise, this was a massive advantage. It felt intimate; you ran into friends and comedians constantly.

To elevate the experience, we booked a Penthouse Suite. This is a spacious, rear-facing suite that offers incredible wake views. While it didn’t include access to “The Haven” (NCL’s ship-within-a-ship concept), it came with perks that made a huge difference:

  • Butler & Concierge Service: They handled all our requests instantly.
  • Exclusive Dining: We enjoyed calm, private breakfasts and lunches in Cagney’s and Moderno, completely skipping the main dining room rush.

We also explored the specialty dining, hitting up Cagney’s (Steakhouse), Moderno (Brazilian Steakhouse), and La Cucina (Italian), all of which were top-notch.

Pre-Cruise Highlight: Tampa & Bern’s Steakhouse

The cruise departed from Tampa, which I highly recommend. It is significantly calmer and easier to navigate than Miami or Port Canaveral.

However, the real highlight of Tampa was our dinner the night before at the legendary Bern’s Steakhouse. This isn’t just dinner; it’s an event. After a fantastic meal, we were taken on a tour of the kitchen and their massive wine cellar. The evening ended in their separate “Dessert Room,” where we sat in private, pod-like booths. Each booth has its own sound system where you can select a music station and even a phone to call the live pianist to request songs. It was the perfect prelude to the cruise.

Destination Spotlight: Costa Maya, Mexico

Our only port of call was Costa Maya. The port area itself is very modern and developed, featuring two pools with swim-up bars, a “sand beach” (no ocean access), flamingos, and a wellness center offering massages in hammocks.

Pro Tip from Darino Travel: While the port is fun, the real magic is 10 minutes away. We took a quick taxi to Mahahual Beach. This area features a lovely malecon (boardwalk) lined with beach bars. To escape the crowds and vendors, we ate lunch at Luna’s, which is tucked just off the malecon and was peaceful and delicious. Highly recommend the freshly caught red snapper!

Later, we found a beach bar on the malecon to swim. The best part? No expensive “day pass” required. Most bars here let you use their loungers and beach access as long as you order food and drinks.
